What Is a Book Nerd Quilt?
A book nerd quilt can be identified as a quilt that features book quilt blocks in the design. You could also use the term “book nerd quilt” to refer to a quilt created using book-themed fabric.
A popular design for these quilts is a book shelf quilt pattern. A bookshelf is the perfect pairing for a 2D quilt block since the books and shelves can be made using strips of fabric.
When making custom quilts, I made a bookshelf quilt using clothing my client sent to me. I wish I had taken more pictures! It was so much fun to design and create it. Below is a picture of the finished quilt.
How To Make a Book Nerd Quilt
I don’t have a full tutorial for you on how to make a bookshelf quilt, but I will break down the steps you will take to create one. You will follow these steps for any book block quilt pattern options I show you later in this post.
- Choose your quilt pattern.
- Choose your fabric.

- Sew the rows together to make the quilt top.
- Create your quilt sandwich (quilt top, batting, and backing.)
- Quilt your quilt as desired.
- Trim excess batting and backing from the quilt and square it up.
- Sew the binding to the quilt’s edge. Enjoy!
