Do They Make Patterns For Dog Clothes?
This common question will pop up when thinking about sewing for dogs. Yes, They do! And there are so many options available.
Dressing your dogs and other fur babies up for Halloween and other festive occasions has become increasingly popular and downright expected in 2022. You can find all kinds of themed costumes in stores and online.
But why not try to make something yourself? Imagine creating matching costumes for your entire family (pupper included!) This would be a fabulous opportunity to test out your creativity and have with it, plus you’ll have fun and unique photos to show off and be able to tell everyone you made all the costumes yourself this year.
You can find patterns for all kinds of dog clothes, whether you are searching for a specific costume like Batman or you just want a cute doggie pajama set for Christmas family pics. There are patterns for pretty much everything.
One of the best places to look for dog costume patterns is Etsy.com. There are entire shops dedicated to making clothing patterns for our four-legged companions. Etsy is a great place to start when searching for the perfect pattern.
How To Measure a Dog For Clothes
Most dog clothes patterns are made with multiple size options. You will need to take some measurements to make the right size for your dog. The three most common measurements you will need to take are:
- Neck: the circumference around the thickest part of your dog’s neck
- Girth: the circumference around the thickest part of your dog’s chest
- Length: the distance from the base of the neck to the base of the tail
Other measurements you may need to take depending on the complexity of the pattern are:
- Height: measurement between the top of the should blade to the bottom of the front feet
- Waist: circumference around the belly area closest to the back legs
Depending on your dog’s temperament, you may need two people to take these measurements. Use a seamstress tape measure (not a metal carpenter tape measure) to take the measurements. You’ll get more accurate measurements, and the metal one can scare or potentially hurt a pup.
If your dog just doesn’t sit still, try sneaking up on them when they are sleeping and get the measurements then.

Here is a fantastic tutorial from The Pointy Snoot on how to use a regular onesie pattern and then add these fun bone-shaped fleece applique pieces to create a unique costume for your pup. The maker gives a free pattern for a Whippet onesie to use along with this tutorial, or you can use a store-bought onesie if you can’t find a pattern for your dog’s size.
Well, doesn’t this little lady look gorgeous in her festive dress? This dog dress is from the Etsy shop “SofiaandFriends.” All their dog clothing patterns come in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL, which is adorable that they are size inclusive for almost all dogs. This pattern is meant for someone comfortable sewing and might not be the best choice for a beginner since it has quite a few intricate details.
If you have a fancy party you are going to with your favorite four-legged companion, they should probably dress the part, right? This tuxedo bandana is an excellent choice for those pups who aren’t huge fans of wearing a lot of clothing but certainly don’t want to be underdressed for a black-tie event. The pattern includes three sizes: small, medium, and large.
Here we have another great free tutorial for a pupper costume, this time for a colorful unicorn! This tutorial takes you through each step and has well-written instructions and photos to help you along the way. This is one that the kids will love helping you make.
If you and your kids love the animated film How To Train Your Dragon, then you will LOVE this costume. The best part? It’s a free pattern and tutorial! The tutorial is well-written and has plenty of photos for us visual learners.
If you’re a huge Star Wars fan (like me), you’re letting out a little squeal right about now over this adorable Ewok costume. I wish my pup, Princess Obi-Wan (yes, I combined the names Princess Leia and Obi-Wan Kenobi…hehe), would let me dress her in costumes because this would be at the top of my list. This is a free ewok pet costume pattern + tutorial.
This is the one for you if you want a quick, easy, free tutorial! For this tutorial, you simply purchase a dog hoodie in the right size for your pup. You then sew the dino scales onto the back of the hoodie, and BOOM! Instant Dinosaur costume. This would be a fun idea to make for all your kids: humans and fur babies.
I found this pattern in the Etsy shop “PawtternForPets.” You could use this pattern for so many different applications. For example, a Sherlock Holmes-themed costume would be adorable. Or perhaps make it using red velvet, which could be a princess cape for your little lady. The pattern includes five sizes that you can choose from, so matter what size your pup is, you should find a size that will work for you.
