There’s just something about making an item with your own hands and then using it in your home that brings such joy and fulfillment to you. At least, that’s how I feel; maybe I’m weird. Haha! Let’s dive right into today’s topic and see what kind of sewing projects are possible.
What Are the Best Sewing Projects for Beginners?
This is such a great question because I think many beginner sewists get hung up on what type of sewing projects they should try first. I know I did when I started sewing 8+ years ago.
The best project for one person may differ from the best for another; however, I believe sewing home decor items is a great way to try sewing, and I’ll tell you why.
Many fantastic beginner-friendly home decor sewing patterns and tutorials are available online or in books. Many of these sewing projects have step-by-step instructions and only take a few steps to create something beautiful that you can be proud of.
These types of projects are great for building your confidence in your sewing skills, plus you’ve made something practical that you can use in your home as decor or a functional piece for daily use.

Who doesn’t love a cute basket? Am I right? This free tutorial from Beverly of Flamingo Toes will show us how to make this fun, practical basket in about 30 minutes. Quick and easy projects are a great way to hone your sewing skills.
This is a fantastic tutorial + free pattern from Crafty For Home. This cozy can hold a pint of ice cream or cup-o-noodles. I’ve seen lots of tutorials for a regular bowl cozy, but this size cozy is perfect for that yummy pint of ice cream.
Do you have extra flat sheets lying around and are unsure what to do with them? Well, Jenna from Making Things is Awesome has the solution! Using her tutorial, you can use two flat sheets and create a duvet cover.
Here is a free pattern + tutorial from The Stitching Scientist that shows you how to make a draft stopper. You can also use it as a doorstop to keep a door open.
