Introducing the Free Cottage Twirl Quilt Pattern!

I am super excited to talk to you guys today! Today, I am introducing my brand new FREE quilt pattern called “Cottage Twirl!” This quilt pattern has been a labor of love. I’ve been slowly working on designing the quilt, writing the pattern, testing the pattern, and stepping up my photography game to ensure I do this beautiful beginner-friendly quilt pattern justice.

This post is dedicated to answering any questions that you might have about the pattern and showing you why this pattern is perfect for beginners AND seasoned quilters.

Why I Designed the Free Cottage Twirl Quilt Pattern

Quilting is my first love in the sewing arena, and I’ve designed several quilt patterns either as a ghostwriter or for the other quilt-related blog I write for. But I wanted to create something special for my own website that is entirely mine and would make an excellent introduction to quilting to inspire other quilters no matter their skill level.

Enter the fabulous Tara Reed, a talented fabric designer, blogger, and YouTuber. I helped her out in one of her many tutorials, and we talked about Riley Blake Designs, the fabric manufacturer she designs fabric for.

She mentioned she could give my contact info to one of the people in charge of their blog, and long story short, I was presented with the fantastic opportunity to write a guest blog post for Riley Blake Designs’ blog!

The Quilt Design Process

I was ecstatic to be given this opportunity to work with a company that I love and write for another blog that features my favorite type of sewing!

My favorite place to buy fabric is Missouri Star Quilt Co! They have a HUGE selection of quilting and sewing fabrics. If you use the button below, you can get 20% any $50+ order! (This is an affiliate link, and I may receive a commission from qualifying sales at no extra charge to you!)

I could choose from a few fabric collections, but I was immediately drawn to Tara Reed’s new fabric collection, “Happy At Home,” which has the cutest birds and floral prints in warm, happy colors. After choosing my fabric, I started designing a quilt for this quaint and adorable fabric line.

I knew I wanted to create a throw-size quilt. I wanted it to be beginner-friendly, and I wanted to make the quilt pattern free. So I opened up my Electric Quilt EQ8 Software and got to work!

I chose two excellent foundation quilt blocks that every quilter should know how to make. Also, this quilt is quick to construct, and you could easily make it over a weekend.

I personally love the look of cottage quilt designs, and this free quilt design captures that cottage look effortlessly, especially with the gorgeous fabrics.

The Quilt Blocks Featured in the Cottage Twirl Quilt Pattern

It was important to me to include quilt blocks that are beginner-friendly but still look beautiful. I chose to use two blocks for the entire quilt: the Nine Patch and the Friendship Star.

Together, these quilt blocks create a beautiful design with a lot of movement and look incredible in any fabric. I’m actually planning on making another one using all double gauze cotton. I can’t wait to show you that one!

The finished quilt measures 66” x 78”.

The Nine Patch

This block is super quick and easy to piece together since you only use one size square for all nine pieces. Below you can see the quick construction and how CUTE are those fabrics?!

The unfinished blocks measure 12 1/2″ square.

The Friendship Star

The Friendship Star is one of my favorite quilt blocks. I love the simple points and easy construction of this block. To make this block, you need four half-square triangles (HSTs) and five squares, all the same size.

It is pieced together just like a nine-patch block and looks fantastic in so many different color combinations. The unfinished blocks measure 12 1/2″ square.

Being Featured on the Riley Blake Designs Blog!

If you couldn’t tell, I am pretty excited to have a blog post on the RBD blog. This truly is a dream come true for me, and I’m very thankful for the opportunity.

I’ve wanted to release a quilt free pattern since I started my blog in April 2022, and I thought this opportunity was the perfect catalyst for me to create something I could offer to all of my readers and those over at Riley Blake as well.

    1. Thank you! I wrote the pattern to be used with yardage, however, you could use precuts if you would like. All the squares needed for the pattern are 4 1/2″ squares so you can either cut them from charm squares, layer cakes, fat eighths, or fat quarters! I hope that helps! Thank you for stopping by and enjoy the pattern!

  1. Love this, I do simple quilts of valor and live near Baltimore. In honor of the American flag at Ft. McHenry with 15 stars and stripes, I like to do quilts with 15 stars. This is perfect with color changes.
