Roses and Daisies and Tulips! Oh My! 13 No-Sew Felt Flowers Ideas

Felt is a fun material to work with for all ages, and the possibilities are truly endless when it comes to what you can make with it. One of my favorite projects is no-sew felt flowers. They are simple to construct and make beautiful decorations and accessories.

Today’s post is the 2nd entry in my Felt Crafts series. If you would like to read my overview of using felt for different crafty projects, you can check that out here. Now, let’s look at the plethora of floral crafts we can make with felt.

What Kind of Felt To Use For Flowers?

This is an interesting topic that we should address before looking at how to make a no-sew fabric flower. Personal preference will play a role in what kind of felt you choose to use, but let me point out some key differences between the different types of felt.

3 Types of Felt

  • Natural- wool, cotton, and fur
  • Synthetic- acrylic and acrylonitrile
  • Combination- natural and synthetic fibers

Key Differences Between Natural and Synthetic

  • Natural tends to be more dense and stiff; synthetic is more pliable and not so densely pressed.
  • Natural is strong under pulling pressure; synthetic can tear more easily if stretched too much.
  • Natural is more challenging to create tiny details; it tends to fall apart if the pieces are too small. Synthetic work great for small details (imagine a quarter or smaller).
  • Natural felt can stand the test of time and last for years of use; synthetics will pill and wear out over time.
  • You can use an iron with natural felts, but not with synthetics; they will melt.
  • Natural is more expensive than synthetic.

So which felt is best for no-sew felt crafts? It will depend on the specific project and what it will be used for. For example, if you make a flower wreath, you can probably use synthetics or combination felts since no one will handle the wreath that much.

However, if you want to make flowers or other toys for children to play with, investing in natural felt like wool is better.

How Do You Make Felt Petals?

I have found some AMAZING no-sew felt flowers tutorials for you guys, which we will check out shortly. Before we do, I want to offer a few suggestions for making your own felt flower petals if you can’t find a tutorial for the exact shape you want.

  • Search online for flower outline clipart. You can easily find thousands of different floral clipart options that you can download and print out as a felt flower template.
  • Search online for simple flower coloring pages. Like the clipart, you can download, print, and cut out the flower outlines and use them as templates for different felt crafts.
  • Draw your flower petal templates. If you can draw, you could create your templates and be in complete control of the size and shape of the flowers.

Once you have the templates you want to use picked out, all you have to do is trace the outline onto the felt and cut the petals out! Pretty simple, right?
